Come as you are

I teach a course on doctrine twice a month in my church. The lesson topics are drawn from discussions we have on other weeks, and I spend at least 30 minutes daily preparing for my lessons.

The phrase “come as you are” has been on my mind lately as we’ve discussed unity. Our discussions have focused on unity with sustained church leaders frequently, but “come as you are” surfaces in my mind frequently.

It has a powerful message: no matter where you are, a relationship with Jesus Christ will improve you. No matter what your current religious belief (or active non-belief), you can stand improvement. No matter the prevalence of sin in your life (and there is such a thing), you can come as you are and progress.

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30
