I know that man is nothing

10 And it came to pass that it was for the space of many hours before Moses did again receive his natural strength like unto man; and he said unto himself: Now, for this cause I know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed.

Moses 1: 10

More than a decade ago, I lay under the stars overwhelmed by this idea: I am very small on the vastness of the visible universe.

(Nevermind the visible universe is very small in the vastness of everything.)

As I lean back in a chair at camp on the first morning of what I plan to be several weeks away from civilization, I am overwhelmed by the vastness of what I can see.

Stars. From horizon to horizon.

The immensity of what is around me is heavy. It defies description.

It isn’t a vision comparable to what Moses received. But the outcome is the same.

I am nothing. I am physically not more than a rounding error different from the dust on my boots.

But who I am and what I do matters to the Author of the Immensity of the Universe.
